Perimenopause Confusion is Real~ Research Confirms It
Let’s fix the confusion right now.
Hey Ladies,
This one is for every woman who has sat across from a doctor, or stared at her own reflection, and thought: “I don't even know what's wrong with me enough to explain it.”
That feeling has a name now. It's not a personal failing. It's not you being bad at describing your own body.
It is, as of this year, an actual measured, published, peer-reviewed finding.
A brand-new study just confirmed what women in perimenopause have been saying for years: the confusion is real, it's common, and it's not your fault.
The confusion is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It is a sign that perimenopause itself is confusing — and now there's research to prove it.

What the New Research Actually Found
A new study, published in the journal Menopause in 2026, set out to answer a question that's been sitting in the room for years: why do so many women feel confused and uncertain during perimenopause, even the ones actively looking for answers?
The study was co-authored by Dr. Stephanie Faubion, medical director for The Menopause Society — not a random internet claim, an actual finding from one of the leading clinical voices in this field.
Here's what they found, broken down by driver:
56% of women's uncertainty came down to symptom confusion and attribution — difficulty interpreting bodily changes and telling perimenopause apart from other causes
28% came down to knowledge gaps and information-seeking — limited health literacy, age-based assumptions, and active but unsuccessful searches for answers
16% came down to barriers to confirmation and care — dismissive healthcare encounters and reluctance to acknowledge what's happening
Translation: more than half of the confusion isn't about lack of effort. It's that the symptoms themselves are genuinely hard to interpret — even when you're paying close attention.
“Recognizing perimenopause uncertainty as a common experience can help shift the conversation from searching for a diagnosis to providing women with the information, validation, and support they need.” — Dr. Stephanie Faubion, The Menopause Society
The Three Real Reasons Perimenopause Feels So Confusing
Let's break down what's actually driving this, because each one has a different fix.
Reason 01
🧩 Symptom Confusion
Perimenopause symptoms don't come with labels. Fatigue could be stress. Irritability could be your job. Brain fog could be lack of sleep. Every symptom has a dozen other plausible explanations, which is exactly why more than half of women in the study got stuck right here.
Reason 02
📚 Knowledge Gaps
This one isn't really your fault, either. Perimenopause research is genuinely underfunded compared to almost everything else in women's health. For context: the National Institutes of Health has roughly 1.2 million published articles related to pregnancy. Menopause has just under 100,000. Perimenopause specifically has only around 8,000. You were never handed the full picture, because the full picture is still being written.
Reason 03
🚪 Barriers to Care
The study also found that dismissive healthcare encounters and reluctance to bring symptoms up at all played a real role. Interestingly, this barrier peaked for women ages 40–44, while younger women (35–39) were more likely to cite pure knowledge gaps. Different age, different obstacle, same result: confusion that lingers longer than it should. When symptoms linger longer, it may be harder to uncover the triggers that make them worse. What’s Making Your Menopause Symptoms Worse covers the most common triggers in detail.
What This Means for You
→ Stop assuming vague symptoms mean nothing. Fatigue, irritability, and brain fog are exactly the symptoms this study found hardest to attribute — which makes them worth tracking, not dismissing
→ Bring data, not just a feeling, to your appointment. “I feel off” is easy to dismiss. A pattern tracked over weeks is much harder to wave away.
→ Know that the research gap is real, not a reflection of you. If you've felt like you were failing to find clear answers online, you were partly right — the answers are genuinely thinner here than in almost any other area of women's health.
→ Give yourself the grace this study just gave you. Confusion during perimenopause isn't a personal shortcoming. It's a documented, common, measured experience.
If you are 40–44, be ready to advocate harder. This is exactly the window where the study found healthcare barriers peaked. Walking in prepared changes that conversation
You Are Not Imagining This
Most menopause content treats confusion as a personal gap to close — as if the right supplement, the right app, or the right amount of googling should have made this clearer by now.
This study says otherwise. The confusion you've felt has a real, published, data-backed explanation. It was never about you not trying hard enough.
That doesn't mean you're stuck feeling confused forever. It means the next step isn't “try harder to figure it out alone.” It's building an actual strategy — one built around your specific symptoms, your specific patterns, and the questions that are actually worth bringing to your provider.
